Renger’s Champagne Smiles!

It was a much better weekend for RSC Mucke Motorsport driver Renger van der Zande who gave his team their first ever podium in GP3 and at their home race in Hockenheim.

It was a big relief and great reward for Renger and the whole team after he had struggled with an underpowered car for the last 3 rounds. After a complete rebuild last week and a new engine, he was back up to speed and finished a strong 3rd in Race 1.

The rain went away and the sun even came out as the Dutch driver moved up from 5th place to 3rd in the first lap. Two safety cars meant any gap he had built up over the chasing Championship leader Gutierrez was depleted. But as the race continued the gap increased and Renger finished third.  

That meant a 6th place start for Sunday’s race. The now traditional opening lap chaos ensued but the top six escaped unscathed. Renger made up a position but the progress was short-lived as he was hit off at the hairpin.

It was a disappointing end to a positive weekend and Renger now heads to Hungary next weekend hunting for more points. "Let's start with the positives! I was very happy to give my team their first podium and at the home race”, Renger said. “We seem to have solved the issues with the engine and the speed and performance were both there. It was a real shame to end the weekend being hit off and there seems to be an increasing number of crashes in GP3 which is a shame as you are always trying to give your best and too often, through no fault of your own, you end up watching from the pit wall instead of taking part."
