Down in Power and Luck

Despite moving up 16 places during the first GP3 race of the weekend, Renger van der Zande’s race ended in disappointment. It was always going to be difficult having to start from 29th and second last place on the grid after a broken turbo hampered him throughout qualifying.

With both qualy and Race 1 just hours apart, the RSC Mucke Motorsport Team worked hard and changed the turbo in time and Renger re-paid their efforts with a stunning start.

By the end of lap 1 he had moved up ten places to 20th. Battle commenced for the next 5 laps and there was some great overtaking moves and self preservation required to stay in the game - Renger narrowly escaped after being forced off track by Stefano Coletti but made it back ahead of the Monegasque driver.

Now up to 14th, the Dutch driver had been running behind Mikhail Aleshin  he moved alongside to try and pass but the Russian held his line and the two touched.  Renger’s race was over and left struggling to bring his car back to the pitlane.
“I have mixed emotions from today. It is really frustrating as my turbo was broken and that is where the troubles of the weekend started. You can’t do anything if you don’t have the power. But once it was fixed I think I showed that we have the speed in the car and I could overtake people on every lap,” said Renger.

Sadly, Sunday ‘s race was even less successful. Despite passing 5 cars on lap 1, Renger was taken out whilst trying to overtake a car which had spun in the middle of the track.

“It really has been a tough weekend. I had overtaken a lot of cars again but someone tried to pass and went over my front wheel causing so much damage that I couldn’t continue. It has been very frustrating and just shows how important a good qualifying is.  Let’s now just get to Valencia and get some points,” said a frustrated Renger.
