Chequered flag falls on European season

The chequered flag fell on Renger van der Zande’s European season today at Hockenheim, the final race in F3 Euro Series.

After winning this race last year, the Dutch driver was hoping for more of the same in 2009 but it was not to be for the Motopark Academy substitute.

In Race 1 Renger’s car was mistaken as a braking zone by Tiago Geronimi and the resulting puncture after being hit meant his battle was over after just 9 laps. That meant for the finale, he would start from a disappointing 20th on the grid.

Standing water on the track split the grid in whether to use wet or dry tyres and the first few laps looked like an ice rink with cars struggling for any grip.

As other drivers ran out of track and talent, Renger continued to move up the field and had made up 16 places, sitting in an impressive 4th place. It soon became obvious that mathematics is not all drivers strong point – 3 into 1 just doesn’t go. Some over ambitious driving again from Geronimi meant that Renger got sandwiched between the Brazilian and Alex Sims into the hairpin, no one made it round the corner and none of three finished the race, Renger denied a podium and Sims denied his Rookie title.

It was a frustrating end to a great performance by the Dutch driver who was keen to get another podium in Motopark colours. The 23 year old was drafted in just 2 rounds ago in Barcelona where he gave the team their first taste of victory in the series.

Next on the radar of Renger van der Zande is Asia and the world famous Macau Grand Prix in November.
