Renger at pole after "best qualifying ever"

Renger van der Zande showed once again in Portugal that he is not only one of the fastest drivers in the British Formula 3 championship but also the smartest. In a car that was not even one of the very fastest in the field, he nevertheless attained a fantastic pole position for the first race.

"This may have been the best qualification in my career," said Renger afterwards. "During the training rounds it was apparent that the car is not the fastest one here, which made getting to the pole a real challenge. That's why I decided to use another car by taking advantage of an ideal slipstream. That, in combination with a perfect lap, resulted in the pole position. Fantastic."

"During the second qualification I had a red flag during my fastest lap and that was more or less the end of my bid for a second pole. I was eighth, but that shows again how outstanding the first qualification was. Even the fastest Formula 3 Euro Series teams will be there again, so that adds importance to this pole position. I can't wait 'til the race!"
