Victory for Renger van der Zande at Silverstone

Renger van der Zande won an extremely hard-fought victory in Sunday’s second race at the Silverstone circuit. Although Hitech’s driver left the grid in third place, he passed both Max Chilton and Deisuke Nakajima in two extremely elegant manoeuvres – and then had the circuit to himself.

Renger came third in the first race. He had been running in second place when he realised he would be unable to pass the race leader, Ricciardo, and with the interests of the team in mind he decided to let his teammate Walter Grubmuller to overtake to limit the damage to the Austrian’s ranking in the Championship. However, in the second race no-one was able to withstand the Nijmegenaar’s onslaught.

"These are the best races" Renger exclaimed, jubilantly, after the finish. "I really had to fight for first place, and that makes this victory all the more gratifying. I left the grid from third place and retained my position. Then I caught up quickly with Chilton and Nakajima when they were battling with each other. I overtook Chilton on the outside, in the Complex, and did the same with Nakajima shortly afterwards. However, he wasn’t prepared to give up his place without a fight: we actually touched each other several times on the straight. Nevertheless, I succeeded in passing him in the next bend – and the race was in the bag."

The Hitech team was certainly not the fastest of the weekend – but Renger was, nevertheless, able to triumph. "We didn’t have the fastest car, but we won all the same. That really is fantastic", according to the winner.
