Undeserved penalty after fantastic race for Renger

Renger van der Zande had an exciting afternoon at Donington Park. During the first race, the Hitech driver drove to further the team’s best interests and finished second behind teammate Walter Grübmuller. In a second, rain-soaked race it looked as though he was on his way to a spectacular victory until the judges threw a spanner in the works.

“That cost me the afternoon,” said Renger afterwards. “In the first race I drove for the team and we scored a nice double for Hitech on a dry track. Race 2 also began dry, but rain began to fall after the third lap. Then the safety car came out and after it left the track I successfully manoeuvred my way into the lead position. First I overtook Adriano Buzaid in the left bend; then in the right bend that followed I passed Daniel Ricciardo. But Ricciardo didn’t give up, and we collided, sending him into a spin. It was absolutely his fault, but the judges gave me a post-race penalty. That was completely undeserved, and later they agreed too, but it could no longer be reversed.”

“But it was a good weekend for the team anyway, because Walter took another big step toward the front in the championship. Hopefully we’ll continue this trend next week in Spa.”
