The British Formula 3 Cup is the home market for Formula 1 candidates: young talents battle for the prestigious British title under the smoke of the base of most Formula 1 teams.
Renger van der Zande got off to a super start in this competition at the beginning of May, when he led the race at Silverstone from start to finish – with no previous knowledge of the circuit, his team, his car, the Avon tyres or his competitors.
His contract with the Hitech team was concluded three days before the race, at the end of five months’ uncertainty about the continuation of his successful junior career: a number of his Dutch partners had left him completely in the lurch. His answer to this group of blatherers was a smouldering exasperation that drove him to new heights at Silverstone.
He amazed the international car sports world with his convincing out-of-the-blue victory – a victory that was all the more remarkable since he had missed the first race at Oulton Park and the official training session.
The third race will take place on the Rockingham circuit this weekend, and the key question is whether Renger will be able to repeat his stunt. Rockingham is a relatively unknown circuit, part of which is of the form of a banked oval similar to the Lausitzring circuit. The Rockingham circuit is just 3 kilometres long, with a remarkable mix of slow 180-degree hairpin bends and fast sweeping corners.
The question for Renger’s racing fans is whether he can be the challenger again. In any case, after Silverstone his adversaries have been warned.

Renger: "It’s a completely new challenge for me, and I don’t know whether I, in combination with the car's basic set-up, will be able to develop the same speed. So with a slight degree of uncertainty, but motivated through and through, I’m going to take up the challenge."

"Men such as Ricciardo, Chilton and Tandy, darlings of the British public, certainly won’t want me to show them up again. Play the game... that’s my motto for this weekend."
