Renger debuts with brilliant victory at Silverstone

Renger van der Zande left the entire paddock of the British Formula 3 Championship speechless by seizing victory in his very first race in the class. Starting from the second place he overtook pole position driver Max Chilton before he rounded the first bend. The Hitech Racing driver then continued his domination throughout the rest of the race. A failed transmission in race 2 was disappointing, but it couldn’t cast a cloud over Renger’s shining debut in this prestigious championship.

“‘Starting with a bang’ is what we call that,” laughed Renger after the race. “This is fantastic, for sure. I had a super start, like taking off on an empty highway, and after that I could control the race. The howling winds made the driving a bit tricky at times – at one point I flew completely off the track, and after that I just concentrated on keeping my lead. I made sure Chilton didn’t get too close and I had plenty of speed in reserve – that’s a fantastic feeling.”

“During race 2 I was in third place when the transmission gave up the ghost. That’s a shame of course, but these things happen... The team is very happy with me, and I feel I was able to give a lot of feedback on the car. The resulting tuning made the car faster and faster throughout the weekend, which is obviously why you’re out there.”

“For now this race was a one-off,” decided Renger. “We’ll see what the rest of the season brings. At the very least I’ve been able to make a positive contribution to the team and I’ve put my name back on the map.”
