Renger fastest newcomer in GP2 Dubai

Renger van der Zande has had a magnificent Dubai in the GP2 Asia Series. The driver from Nijmegen was thrown into the deep end, considering that, going to the weekend, he had never driven the car or on the track, but drove a very impressive race, eventually finishing in eleventh place. By the end of the race, Renger was running lap times that would have been the envy of the race leaders. The result put a smile not only on his face, but also on the face of team leader Christian Horner, who was full of praise for the driver after the race.

Renger’s lack of experience was only discernible at the start. “I didn’t get off to a very good start,” he says. “But eventually I settled down and then I ran a very decent race. After the pit sop, I had quite a bit of trouble with understeering, because we only changed the rear tyres, so they were better than the front tyres. After I adjusted my driving styling with a bit more oversteering, the balance was restored and everything went very well. The pace was fine then and of course, that is good to see. Tomorrow, I’m going to go right on the attack and then we won’t make a pit stop, so the understeer shouldn’t be as severe.”

Trust Team Arden team leader Christian Horner was deeply impressed by Renger. “He did really well, particularly when you consider that we really threw him into the deep end. He had no experience with either the car or the track, but he was still able to compete with some experienced drivers. Everyone who was ahead of him had years of experience,” the Brit said.

The second race begins Saturday morning at 10.00 a.m. Netherlands time.
