Super final for Renger in Macau

In his final Formula 3 race, Renger van der Zande posted a fantastic time by fighting his way impressively to the front of the field. Starting in the 25th position, Renger stayed out of trouble and demonstrated his speed with excellent lap times and tight passing manoeuvres. The Mercedes junior ultimately finished a very respectable fifth place.

After a disappointing run in the first race, in which he was shut out by his fellow countryman Carlo van Dam, Renger read the field well and stayed out of trouble, while many of his colleagues fell prey to the guardrails in Macau. That in combination with a number of determined passing manoeuvres enabled the Prema Powerteam driver to make up no less than twenty spots and brought his Formula 3 phase to a spectacular finish.

“This was really a fantastic race for me,” Renger says. “Early in the race I was able to stay out of trouble, while there were quite a few crashes and stoppages. “I fought for every position and I brushed the wall quite a few times because I was driving at the absolute limit. I was able to pass a car in nearly every lap and just before the finish of the race, two drivers crashed right in front of me, which pushed me up into fifth place.”

It quickly became apparent to the crowd on hand in Macau that Renger was having an amazing race and treated him to a standing ovation when the race was over. “When I crossed the finish line and the crowd gave me a standing ovation, I just got goose bumps”, he says. “I was given many major compliments after the race and that did me good after the off-day yesterday."

“This was my last Formula 3 race and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Prema family for the fantastic season, Mercedes for all the support I have received throughout the year and of course my management and sponsors for their support. I’m really looking forward to my GP2 racing debut in Dubai on 5 and 6 December. I hope to be able to impress people together with Trust Team Arden.”
