Alert Renger prevents megacrash in Hockenheim

Renger van der Zande finished fifth in the last Formula 3 Euroseries race in Hockenheim. In a bizarre cimpetition, which can hardly be called a race any more, he mostly drove behind the safety car because a lot of competitors quickly went off the track. One of those competitors, James Jakes, looked like he was going to smash into Renger full on, but alert action from the Prema driver prevented a megacrash. Fifth place means that Renger has finished in a remarkably good fourth place in the championship.

“I hardly drove a race circuit”, said Renger. “I mostly drove around zigzagging behind the safety car. I had had quite a few plans for the race, but that’s how things go sometimes. When Jakes flew out in the hairpin, I saw it happening behind me. I saw the chaos and realized immediately that he was going to hit me full on if I did nothing. I therefore put my foot down hard on the gas, as a result of which I missed the corner, but prevented a major crash.”

“Looking back on this season, you could say that we had made a very strong start, but that we had then let a few things slip. If we had earned a couple of points more, I would have finished second. Nevertheless it was an especially pleasant and exciting season and I am looking forward to the traditional very last Formula 3 race of the season in Macau.”
