Renger unable to profit from changing weather conditions

During the second race in Le Mans, Renger van der Zande was unable to profit from the treacherous weather conditions. The Prema driver, who started at the rear of the field after Saturday’s disappointing race, was engaged in a neck-on-neck comeback when he was surprised by the sudden rainfall.

The race was stopped midway, and that was a good thing for Renger who did a one-eighty into the gravel after his tyres lost traction on a stretch of extremely slippery kerbstone. Renger was able to join the restart, and since the rain had stopped he took the gamble of continuing the race on slicks. His gamble turned out to be a poor decision when a new shower crossed the field. “I took a heck of a lot of risks at the beginning,” said Renger. “It was raining a little bit, which made the track rather slippery and I could handle that just fine. At a certain point it suddenly began raining harder and I spun out after hitting a kerbstone in the last bend.”

“The race was stopped and I was able to join the restart. At that point the rain had stopped, so we decided to take the gamble of continuing on slicks. Unfortunately it began raining again immediately after the restart, and the slicks proved to be the wrong choice. It wasn’t such a great weekend for me. One thing after another went wrong. I hope we have everything sorted out again in Hockenheim and that we can finish the season on a positive note.”
