A bit of luck from Renger's accident in Barcelona

The weekend in Barcelona was an unlucky one for Renger van der Zande, but luckily for him, he was not the only one who didn’t have Lady Luck on his side. After a bad start to the weekend and problems at the qualifying stage, the race began with a start crash and the chance of a good result was lost. Renger eventually finished in twenty-fourth place, but as his other rivals failed to score, it is almost certain that he will keep his strong position in third place in the championship after this weekend.

Renger could already write off the race in the first round, when he was pushed by Koudai Tsukakoshi in the jostling cars and crashed. The competition board named him as the one at fault in the first instance and after extensive repair in the pit lane, Renger also had to deal with a drive-through penalty. After the race, Renger consulted the stewards and after studying the images they found that Renger was not the perpetrator, rather the casualty in the accident. Renger himself had few words to say after the race. “I’m just totally done with it. I’m going into town for a while", he sighed.

Renger currently holds third position in the championship, with 37 points.
