‘Fifth was the best I could manage’

In the first race at the Nürburgring, Renger van der Zande finished in a solid fifth place. The Prema Powerteam driver gained two places at the start and was easily able to match the pace of the drivers ahead of him, until a back marker caused a delay. Fifth place did however deliver valuable points in the fight for the championship.

“For today, this was the best I could do”, he said. “I had a great start once again, and gained two places together. I was really able to keep up with Mika Mäki in front of me until a back marker didn’t move over soon enough and I lost around 30 metres on him. After that it was really difficult to catch him again as I had lost the slipstream. I decided to settle for fifth place and the points that came with it.”

“The car was suffering from over steer on entering the bends and we’ll have to work on that for tomorrow’s race. I want to earn more points in the second race as we’re doing really well in terms of the championship, given that the championship leader Mortara didn’t finish in the points and will have to start at the back tomorrow. I want to do it, and hopefully we’ll put on a good show again on Sunday.”
