Renger in pole position after a fantastic race

After qualifying, there was great disappointment in the Prema Powerteam that they could not get the car set up correctly. Renger van der Zande had to start from 24th position and decided to totally change the set-up of the car. This resulted in him finishing in eight place in the first race and gave him pole position for Sunday's race. After the race, the 22 year old said it was his best race ever.

Since the circuit is small, qualifying was split into two groups and Renger had to complete his qualifying laps in the first group. He had no grip on the drying circuit and the yellow chalk on the new tyres had not worn off after the qualifying laps had been completed. The car's set-up was changed for the race and Renger drove impressively to overtake a number of drivers, which eventually saw him finish in eighth place.

“It was the most fantastic race of my career. From my time in the carts until now, I've never driven a better race”, Renger laughed. “Even though the circuit is very narrow, I overtook cars all over the place. I had to give out a few knocks, but also took a few. I also hit the wall a couple of times, so the car had a fair amount of damage. Only the left-hand side of the car was still in once piece after the race.”

“When I heard over the on-board radio that I was eighth, I was over the moon. It meant that I was in pole position for the race the next day and you can't do any better than that in such a race.”

Renger has lost his fourth place in the championship to Franck Mailleux, but since his competitors Mika Mäki and Nico Hulkenberg have to start towards the back of the grid, Renger can again do well on Sunday.
