Renger van der Zande extends his lead in the American Endurance Championship

Second place on the podium at Mosport/ Canada was cold comfort for the Starworks Motorsport team and the driving duo van der Zande & Popow. They were fastest all weekend, but a strategic error put a spanner in the works in the final stages of the IMSA Endurance Championship race. However, this podium result did further reinforce the leading position in the American Championship.

Toronto 11 July 2016

It was the Core team with Colin Braun and Jonathan Bennett that took first place in the Le Mans Prototype class. Renger van der Zande and team mate Alex Popow came in second place at the beautiful track near Lake Ontario. A circuit of just under 4 kilometres, located in the forest, with differences in elevation and fast corners and where ‘the men are separated from the mice’. Renger van der Zande was consistently tenths of a second faster than the rest of the field in the free training sessions. Popow was chosen as the starting driver and had driven the sixth fastest time in the qualifying session. During the race Van der Zande took the wheel in P5. He then rolled up the entire field and took the lead. A yellow flag situation and a strategic error by the team forced him to drop back behind Colin Braun. And this was the final result at the finish, with Tom Kimber-Smith in third place. In the general standings of the race the team finished in seventh place behind race-winner Cameron in the Chevrolet Daytona Prototype. The team performed well in the American Championship, which is now led by van der Zande by a 14-point margin.

Renger: “This was another fun race. It just gives you a kick to steam from fifth to first place. Overtaking is always a thrill on this type of super-fast circuit. Besides that I am in a jet-lag inducing travel schedule. Last week Watkins Glen, training in the intervening week with Mercedes AMG in Spa-Francorchamps and in Canada again this weekend. I am now at the home base in Amsterdam for a week and then we head off for Lime Rock in New York. In the following week, at the end of July, there is the 24 hours of Spa- Francorchamps, where I will drive for Mercedes AMG.”.
