Podium place for van der Zande/Götz at the Nürburgring

In a racing suit borrowed from teammate Maximilian Götz, Renger van der Zande made the podium in the Eifel. His last-minute call-up to partner the HTP Mercedes team’s Götz in his race for the Championship led to a superb debut for Renger in this ADAC GT Masters competition. The tyre changes in response to the changeable weather, which lasted throughout the weekend, had no effect on van der Zande’s fighting spirit. P3 and mission accomplished with the HTP team!

Adenau, 31 August 2014

A heavy downpour just before the start of the race, tyre poker with slicks and wet tyres and a Safety Car situation in the second half of the race made the sixth race of the ADAC GT Masters championship one of the most exciting of the year. It was Renger van der Zande’s debut in this class. And that didn’t pass unnoticed. At one point, the TV commentator enthusiastically exclaimed: “Look out for that Dutchman, he’s here to win…” But it didn’t quite happen. A slow tyre change during the mandatory pit stop cost the team a vital 12 seconds.

At P5, Renger was back on the track with the Mercedes SLS AMG after taking over the wheel from Götz. His first target was the Schubert team’s BMW Z4. A Safety Car situation 22 minutes before the end brought him closer. Then the hunt began for Engelhart’s Porsche. A daring move around the outside brought P3 in sight, after which it was the turn of the Rast team with the Audi R8. But the team’s rapid advance stopped with just 3 minutes to go. Renger’s reward on his debut in this class? A third place at the Nürburgring. And he coolly reached his target, which was to collect points for teammate Götz. Investor de Pundert’s HTP team was delighted with the day’s work. And after a rewarding weekend Maximilian Götz can now take two racing suits to the dry cleaners.

Renger: “This has been a great year so far. I’m switching between the LMP class in the US and Mercedes in Europe. This was yet another podium and, you know, we could even have won it. It’s a pity about the pit stop as it made all the difference. But this is what can happen, even with HTP, an absolutely top team. This weekend they asked me to score points for Götz and that’s exactly what I did.”
